Understanding Out-gassing Issues on Discs: Prevention and Solutions

What is Out-gassing?

Out-gassing refers to the release of gases or vapors from the materials used in manufacturing discs, which over time can build up a kind of sticky residue/deposit on the readable side of the disc.
This phenomenon can occur with all types of discs, including CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays. The materials used to make these discs can slowly give off gases, resulting in a cloudy film or sticky residue that can degrade playback quality and in some cases make your discs unplayable.

Note: Not all discs are the same - different materials and manufacturing methods mean that some discs will experience out-gassing at an accelerated rate or more often than others. Outgassing may also be invisible to the naked eye initially.

The Impact of Out-gassing

If left unchecked, out-gassing can lead to:
  • • Residue Spots: Sticky or cloudy residue spots becoming visible on your discs.
  • • Playback Issues: Reduced media quality with skips, glitches, or poor sound and picture
  • • Permanent Damage: Prolonged exposure can compromise the disc's surface, rendering your media completely inaccessible

How to Minimize Out-gassing

It's impossible to stop out-gassing entirely, yet there are several steps you can take to minimize its effects:
  1. 1. Store Discs Properly: Always store your discs in protective cases or sleeves.
  2. 2. Avoid exposure to extreme conditions: Avoid leaving discs in environments with high temperatures or fluctuating humidity, such as in vehicles or attics.
  3. 3. Use Quality Materials: If you want to use space-saving storage solutions, choose high-quality products that are made to specific manufacturing standards, and are designed with out-gassing in mind.
